Orientation to the Knowledge Center

The purpose of this free orientation is to:

  • Highlight the features of the Knowledge Center
  • Help you understand the benefits of online learning
  • Explain the minimum technical requirements you will need
  • Introduce you to login procedures
  • Show you how our self-paced courses work
  • Understand the benefits of ISM membership
  • Give you more information about ISM's courses

Knowledge Center Features

  • Ease of navigation - The Knowledge Center offers simple navigation. This is helpful if you are not familiar with online learning.
  • Intuitive – The Knowledge Center anticipates your learning needs by providing the right tools in the right places.
  • Better integration– The Knowledge Center’s discussion area has tight integration into specific courses.
  • Better note-taking – The Knowledge Center’s note-taking ability has greatly improved. You can copy and paste entire pages and graphics for future use.
  • Auto-bookmarking* – The Knowledge Center’s ability to auto-bookmark means that you never lose your place in a course during login and logout (you will go the last page you accessed in a course).
  • Improved printing capabilities – The Knowledge Center offers course content in a printer-friendly format.
  • Enhanced side-bar navigation – The Knowledge Center enables you to see exactly where you are in the learning process at all times. You can orient yourself quickly.

* Note: The Supply Chain Courses Academy (SCA) courses do not have auto-bookmarking capabilities.

Understand the Benefits of Online Learning

ISM's self-paced courses are asynchronous. This means you’ll be able to login whenever it’s appropriate for you, adding a greater level of convenience.

Our courses offer:

  • Availability 24 hours a day
  • An ideal method of learning for self-motivated individuals
  • Students set their own pace
  • Availability wherever there is Internet access
  • Practical job aids and case studies
  • Interactivity with course content

NOTE: Users have access to their courses for one year starting from the date of purchase.

Minimum Technical Requirements

  • Hardware and Operating System
    • PC: Windows: 95, 98, 2000, NT, XP, Vista or 7; Apple: OS X.
    • 90 MHz or greater processor
    • 32 MB RAM or greater
    • Screen resolution of 1024x768 or higher
    • Colors should be set to 256 or greater
    • Internet Access
  • Software

    • On a PC: Microsoft Explorer 6.0 or higher or Mozilla Firefox 1.0 or higher with cookies and JavaScript enabled.
    • On an Apple: Safari or Mozilla Firefox 1.0 or higher with cookies and JavaScript enabled.
    • Microsoft Word (or compatible) to read downloaded course documents
    • Adobe Flash Player version 9 or greater

Accessing Your ISM Self-Directed Online Courses

  1. To access the courses in which you have enrolled, click on the "Classes" tab.
  2. You will be able to see a listing of the courses that you are enrolled in. Click on the blue link title to enter the course.
  3. Upon entering your course for the first time, you will be prompted to take a pre-test. This pre-test does not count for or against you. It is simply a tool for you to measure your current knowledge. You can review how you did after you have submitted your answers. If you have entered the course before, you will directed to the page you left off on.
    Note: The Supply Chain Academy (SCA) courses do not have the ability to remember where you left off in the course.
  4. Once all course lessons and learning objectives have been completed you will be prompted to take a post-test. In order to pass the post-test you must achieve a score of 70% or above for ISM Self-Directed courses and 80% or above for Supply Chain Academy (SCA) courses. You may take the post-test as many times as you like until you achieve the required percentage to pass.
  5. After passing the post-test, you will be prompted to take a small evaluative survey. The survey will ask you questions related to your experiences going thought the online course.
  6. Once you have completed the survey you will have the ability to print your certificate of completion. You can access your certificate through the transcript tab.

ISM Self-Directed Online Course Lecture

Left side navigation - The navigation on the left side of the course lecture screen delineates where you are in the course, lesson, learning objective and page. A green rectangle indicates completed pages of the lecture. A small black triangle indicates what page you are on.

Top navigation - The navigation above the course lecture delineates where you are in the hierarchy of the course. Courses consist of lessons, learning objectives and individual pages. (Where it says "You are here.")

Notebook - Clicking on "Copy to Notebook" from within the course lecture will allow you to add your own personal note. You can copy, paste, edit, delete, and read your notes from anywhere in the site.

Library - Click on the library tab to see all articles inside a single course. All courses may have their own library of resources. Resources can consist of any type of Web-based content, links to outside resources, and file attachments.  Library resources will be listed alphabetically by title.  

Glossary terms - Click on the underlined word (blue) to open the Glossary window. The Glossary contains definitions of terms used in the course. Click on the glossary tab to see all definitions inside a single course.

Back - Clicking on the Back button found at the top and bottom of the lesson will allow you to move backwards within the lesson.

Next - Clicking on the Next button found at the top and bottom of the lesson will allow you to move forward within the lesson. Once you have clicked Next, the previous page you just visited is marked as complete.

Discussions - Threaded discussions allow students and instructors to post topics of interest and reply to postings in a format that all can participate in. The image below is an example of a message posting that has a single reply:

The benefits of ISM membership

Members can enroll in a free cost/price analysis course, ethics course, or take one of the growing number of other self-directed online courses and earn Continuing Education Hours towards C.P.M./CPSM® recertification.

ISM members receive a $100 discount on all ISM Knowledge Center courses. Just make sure you have updated your profile in the administration area of the Knowledge Center with your ISM membership number as it appears on your membership card.

Retrieving Your User Name and Password

It may have been awhile since you have accessed ISM’s Knowledge Center online courses. In order to access the Knowledge Center you will need to have your user name and password. If you have forgotten your account information you can retrieve this information through the User Name / Password Reminder page. To have your user name and password sent in an email to you do the following:

  1. Click on the "Forgot your username/password?" link.
  2. Enter your email address in the field provided.
  3. Click on the Enter button

Note: An email with your user name and password will be sent to you within 5 minutes.

Important: If you receive an error message that your email address is not in the system it will mean that either the email address you entered doesn’t match with what we have in the system or that we don’t have your information in the system.

If this happens you can:

  1. Contact customer service to determine your user name and password
  2. Create a new account by going to the Creating a Customer Profile link.

Your login information will be sent to the email address you entered in the previous page.

Once you receive your User Name and Password you can access the Knowledge Center.

Purchasing a Course

Once you are in the Knowledge Center you have the option of purchasing an online course. You will follow this same path if you would like access to ISM's free courses. You will need to click on the ISM Course Offerings/Purchase Courses section of the Knowledge Center to purchase a course.

  1. Click on one of 22 categories in Course Topics to view the list of courses within the selected categories, or use the 'Search Classes' function (far right on the navigation bar) to search by keyword.

  2. Click on the specific course you want to purchase (or learn more about—most courses have an content outline).

  3. Click on the log in link to add the specific course to your shopping cart.

  4. Enter your ISM Username and Password on the Log In page. Click the Log In button once the information is entered.

    NOTE: You may need to scroll down the page to view the username and password fields.

    Important: You will need to create a new account if you are a non-member and have never logged into the ISM web site. Click on the "Click here to create a new account" link below the username and password fields to create a new account.

  5. Click the Add to Cart link to purchase an online course.


    NOTE: Once you click the Add to Cart link you will have the option to view your shopping cart and checkout or continue shopping for additional online courses.

  6. Click the View Cart / Checkout link to review your order.



  7. Review your order.

    Note: At this point you can make adjustments to your order by clicking on the 'Update Cart' button. In addition, you can continue to add additional courses by clicking on the 'Continue Shopping' button. If you are satisfied with your order you can click the 'Checkout' button to process your order.


    Important: If your company has given you a special ISM-promotional code for purchasing courses, enter that code in the Promo Code field. Your discount will appear on the Checkout screen.

    Note: If purchasing a SCA course you will need to check the box next to the SCA license agreement.

  8. Enter your payment information.


    Note: For the free courses, you will not need to enter payment information.
  9. Click the 'Place Order' button once you have reviewed your purchase to complete the transaction.

  10. Print your order summary by clicking on the 'Print Invoice' link.


    Note: You can return to the Knowledge Center by clicking on the 'Go Back to Knowledge Center' link located at the top left portion of the page. Once your purchase your course, you will need to login to the Knowledge Center to access your course.

Logging into the Knowledge Center

Once you have completed a Customer Profile and have completed the registration process you can access the Knowledge Center. Both First Time Users and Returning Users can follow this procedure to access the Knowledge Center.

  1. Go to the Knowledge Center at http://www.ism-knowledgecenter.ws
  2. Click the Login link.
  3. Enter your User Name and Password.
  4. Important: Your username and password are case sensitive.

    Note: Click to retrieve your User Name and Password if you have forgotten them.

  5. Click the Enter button to continue.

You have now entered into your personal home page in the Knowledge Center. You now have the ability to navigate through the Knowledge Center, purchase and access courses.

Accessing Your Transcripts

Once you complete your course you will need to access the transcript area to view your course progress, access completed courses, obtain pre / post and knowledge check scores, and print your certificate for completion. To access the transcript area do the following:

  1. Click on the Transcript tab located in the upper right corner of the page.
  2. Click on a course where you want to see the transcript information.
  3. To print your certificate go to "Print Your Certificate of Completion" link located at the top of the page.
  4. To review your pre/post and knowledge check scores use your curser to scroll down the page.
  5. To access your course go to the bottom of the page and click "Enter Classroom" link.

Accessing Your Self-paced Online Class

Once you have entered your personal home page in the Knowledge Center you can access your course materials. To access a class you will need to be enrolled in the class. To access your enrolled class do the following:

  1. Click the Classes tab
    Note: You will be able to see a listing of the courses that you are enrolled in.
  2. Click on the blue link title to enter the course.
  3. Upon entering your course for the first time, you will be prompted to take a pre-test. This pre-test does not count for or against you. It is simply a tool for you to measure your current knowledge. You can review how you did after you have submitted your answers.

    Note: If you have entered the course previously, you will directed to the page you left off on.
  4. Once all course lessons and learning objectives are complete you will be prompted to take post test. You must achieve a 70% (80% for SCA courses) to pass. You can take the post test as many times as you need to in order to pass.
  5. After you complete the post-test you will be required to complete a short survey. This survey will evaluate your satisfaction with the class. ISM uses this information to enhance our course offerings.
  6. Once you complete the survey, you can access your transcripts and print your certificate of completion.

Printing Your Certificate

Once you have completed your post test and the evaluation survey you will be able to print your certificate of completion for the course. To print your certificate do the following.

  1. Click on the "Transcript" tab located in the upper right corner of the page.
  2. Click on a course you want to print the certificate of completion.
  3. Click on the "Print Your Certificate of Completion" link located at the top of the page.

    Note: Your certificate will be displayed
  4. Click OK to open the print options for the certificate.
  5. Click Print to complete the process.

Navigating Through the Knowledge Center

There are many navigation features that are available through the Knowledge Center. These features provide simple navigation to quickly access courses, user transcripts, and completed course certificates. The intuitive interface anticipates your needs by providing the right tools in the right places for those who may not be familiar with online learning courses.

Left side navigation - The navigation on the left side of the course lecture screen delineates where you are in the course, lesson, learning objective and page. A green rectangle indicates completed pages of the lecture. A small black triangle indicates what page you are on. It quickly orientates you the learner to see exactly where you are as you progress through your course.

Top navigation - The navigation above the course lecture delineates where you are in the hierarchy of the course. Courses consist of lessons, learning objectives and individual pages.

Back and Next buttons - Clicking on the Back button found at the top and bottom of the lesson will allow you to move backwards within the lesson. Clicking on the Next button found at the top and bottom of the lesson will allow you to move forward within the lesson. Once you have clicked Next, the previous page you just visited is marked as complete.

Classroom tab – Clicking on this tab will take you back to your course listings. At any time you can click back and forth between your class and your course listings without losing your place in the course.

Discussions tab - Threaded discussions allow students and instructors to post topics of interest and reply to postings in a format that all can participate in. The discussion area provides capabilities for a more integrated forum and discussion section. Discussion forums are for selected courses. The image below is an example of a message posting that has a single reply:

Copy to Notebook – This feature allows you to copy and paste entire pages including graphics for future reference. In addition you can add your own personal note to the page. This note can be read by you anywhere in the site.

Auto Bookmarking – This feature remembers exactly where you last accessed your course so you never lose your place.

Printing Capabilities – This feature offers better tools to improve printing output of content.

Overall Course Evaluation - All courses include rich content containing educational activities, case studies, tasks and more.
